Rietvlei Nature Reserve is situated South East of Pretoria and is run by the Council of Tswane. While it does not have the big five it is great for a day visit or even for a weekend as there is accommodation available in the form of chalets. There are numerous antelope, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra etc. as well as some great bird hides from which you can view the abundant bird life. Once a year, around January, parts of the reserve is covered in a thick carpet of purple and yellow flowers as can be seen in the image of the zebra below.
